For the second time, the East End Brewing Co. is working in tandem with the Toonseum to bring forth, Illustration Ale. Portions of the proceeds are donated to the Toonseum. The first round had 6 different labels drawn by 6 rad illustrators. I remember thinking: “What would I do if I was asked to draw a label?”, there was one logical choice for me. A portrait/caricature of the late, great, Wally Wood. An illustrator/cartoonist who is the quintessential embodiment of the marriage between alcohol and comics. This year they did ask me to do one and here it is.

The feds are finicky about the size of the typeface that contains the volume and brewers info. We ended up with this label.

Hopefully this post gets their attention. Great work!
I like. I think Woody would like it, too.
for sure!
Sweet! When does it go on sale? I have a Pittsburgh contact buy them for me even tho I don’t drink beer.
sorry man……I love satire as much as anyone, but this is so disrespectful to the genius of Wally Wood, that i must relegate this “art” as kicking the memory of a good man when he was down. sadly, i relegate your Label as a Vicarious, Jackal like attempt to further your own fortunes kicking the corpse of Wally Wood……whom you are unworthy of artistically, and ethically. How dare you judge him thus. I’ve passed this along to those that knew him professionally and personally. Grow up. Enjoy the Brew Bro.
Jim Wiz–
Good god, why don’t YOU grow up? Wally Wood himself enjoyed “satirizing” Disney characters in “disrespectful” states of undress, etc. Your overblown sanctimonious hand-wringing is totally embarrassing.
Too bad you don’t like it, so don’t buy it. Wally Wood was a great cartoonist, and I love his work, but let’s not pretend the guy A) didn’t drink and B) didn’t thrive on naughty satirical work himself.
I think the beer is a nice little tribute to Wood, one I expect he’d find himself far more in sympathy with than your silly little diatribe.
Was the art flipped? Or is a leftie for balance? I don’t remember Wood having poofty hair – but I’m sure his assistants would like this.
I think that’s supposed to be a 50′s style pompadour, better known as a “duck’s ass,” than a pouf. I don’t have my old MAD reprints handy, but I believe Wood was quite into the Greasy Kid Stuff. Congrats on getting mentioned in Boing-Boing!
